Ukraine: Anti-Corruption and Asset Recovery Support Project (ACARSU)

The devastating situation caused by the ongoing Russian military aggression against Ukraine necessitates a transparent and sustainable recovery process, which gives a boost to anti-corruption reforms. Switzerland, through Basel Institute on Governance, will strengthen capacities and expertise of relevant institutions and law enforcement agencies to enhance transparency and accountability in the recovery process. In order to ensure the most efficient use of its recovery funding, Switzerland will mainstream anti-corruption approaches in its cooperation programmes in Ukraine.

Heavy storms and rains have caused deadly floods in Libya on Sep. 10th, 2023. Following the collapse of two major dams, an estimated 11,300 people have died, 10,000 are missing and over 200,000 displaced individuals. The town of Derna, where the dams were located, has been devastated. SDC is providing in-kind relief WASH modules to two INGO partners, namely IMC and Acted.

Assistance on Nuclear Safety and Security by supporting the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Expert Missions to Ukraine

Since Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA’s) Response and Assistance Network (RANET) has provided technical assistance to Ukraine. In January 2023, the IAEA addressed to its Member States, including Switzerland, crucial extra budgetary funding needs amounting to Euro 11.8 Mio for the year 2023. This funding supports the IAEA Experts Missions to Ukraine to ensure nuclear safety and security; mitigates humanitarian protection of human live and health, disaster resilience and environmental protection.
Enhanced access of vulnerable populations to healthcare services in conflict-affected areas of Ukraine

SDC will contribute to the provision of vital humanitarian assistance to the hardest-hit areas of southern and eastern Ukraine. The primary objective is to offer free and timely healthcare to those most affected in hard-to-reach areas and to thus improve access to basic health services. Through its partner, SDC will support at least 40 healthcare facilities in Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv, and Donetsk oblasts, with the focus on primary healthcare services.

Strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of locally led protection services

Aligned with SDC's strategic fair partnership principles and localization approaches, Switzerland aims to address existing gaps in fostering a locally-led humanitarian response and increase the outreach of protection services to a bigger number of those in need, while enhancing the quality of protection assistance provided to the most vulnerable children in Ukraine.
Morocco IFRC Emergency Appeal Earthquake 2023

An earthquake with a 6.8 magnitude shook Morocco on 8 September. This earthquake was the deadliest in Morocco since 2004. At least 3’000 people were killed, mostly in Marrakech and the provinces in the High Atlas Mountains, while another 5’600 were injured. The SDC will support the victims of the earthquake with a contribution to the IFRC Appeal.

Following a severe earthquake near Marrakech of a magnitude of 6.8 which caused over 2’000 casualties, numerous injured as well as tremendous destruction, humanitarian assistance will be provided to the affected population under the form of 1) deployment of a “SofortEinsatzTeam / SET”; 2) in-kind donations. Decisions on optimum use of funds will be taken by the Crisis Cell led by the HA delegate in close coordination with desk and CH representation in the country.

FAO Sudan Emergency Livelihoods Response Plan (ELRP)

Six months after the outbreak of conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), 20.3m people face food insecurity. In response, FAO developed the Sudan Emergency Livelihoods Response Plan (ELRP), which aims at restoring and enhancing food production and strengthening agricultural livelihoods to support farming, herding, and fishing communities and vulnerable populations affected by the crisis.

By the end of 2022, 71.1 million people were living in internal displacement worldwide, a 20 per cent increase in a year and the highest number ever recorded (IDMC 2023). Switzerland is actively supporting the implementation of the UN Secretary General’s Action Agenda on solutions to internal displacement with its different instruments. Supporting the newly established Internal Displacement Solutions Fund (IDSF) represents a game-changer in supporting joint UN country level solutions to internal displacement.

Lack or inexistence of social protection mechanisms implies that ill and injured people have no choice but to pay out-of-pocket for health services. Since 2011, the SDC and the German development cooperation have been promoting the use of an open-source software for digital management of social protection schemes. This tool is currently implemented in 10 countries for health, work and social insurance and is targeted to reach 5 additional during this phase.
South Sudan, UNFPA: Strengthening Prevention of And Response to Gender based Violence (GBV) in South Sudan

The proposed funding ensures the continuation of lifesaving GBV prevention and response services, including Clinical Management of Rape (CMR), Psychosocial Support Services (PSS), Legal Aid, Protection, as well as referrals to livelihood opportunities in two (2) established GBV One Stop Centres (OSCs) and a Safe House (SH) in Wau Western Bahr El Ghazal (WBG) and Kuajok, Warrap State. An outreach office and two mobile teams will be established in one remote area for referrals. Existing community based-groups capacities will be further enhanced. UNFPA will pursue advocacy on key policy reforms related to GBV.
