During the political consultations, both dignitaries praised the multi-facetted Turkish-Swiss relations. They also discussed the war against Ukraine and its consequences, as well as the upcoming high-level conference on peace in Ukraine. State Secretary Fasel briefed his counterpart on how the June conference would provide a platform for a high-level dialogue on ways to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on international law and the UN Charter. Tükiye voiced its support in this regard.
Mr Fasel also raised the human rights situation in Türkiye. During the talks, he stressed that Türkiye, as a member of the Council of Europe, is obliged to implement the legally binding rulings of the European Court of Human Rights.
Mr Fasel also exchanged views with his counterpart on regional developments in the Middle East. In addition, he shared details on Switzerland's first year as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Other topics discussed included each country's relations with the EU and their engagement in the Western Balkans and South Caucasus.
These political consultations, which take place every year, make it possible to take stock of bilateral cooperation in areas such as security, migration and trade. They also form the foundation for discussing issues such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law with Türkiye.
