Communications Manager (100%)

Starting date: ideally 1 July 2022 

The Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of communications manager as of 1 July 2022. This is a locally recruited position. You will be working within the communications team and cooperate closely with the mission management, the peace and security team as well as the legal team and the sustainable development and humanitarian affairs team. You will be in charge of various communication and speech writing tasks arising in the context of Switzerland's term on the United Nations Security Council (2023-2024), should Switzerland be elected. 

Our ideal candidate is an outgoing, proactive, eloquent individual with an excellent command of French and English as a working language, both orally and in writing, and of high linguistic precision. He or she is very familiar with diplomatic language, tone and finesse. Ideally, our candidate has already gained experience in journalism and /or in international diplomacy, is an expert in political communication and political messaging with in-depth knowledge of the United Nations system, or has been working for one of the permanent or observer missions at the United Nations. He or she has also a solid knowledge of the Swiss political system and Swiss foreign policy. 

Duties and responsibilities: 

  • In support of the head of mission and communications team, managing the coherent and professional communication of the Swiss mission in matters related to the work of the United Nations Security Council, of other organs and entities, and to Swiss foreign policy
  • Drafting of speeches, official statements and communication products of the mission. Official statements are, as a rule, written and delivered in French
  • Proactive advice, support and preparation of the head of mission and head of communications when interacting with the media (Press, TV, Radio) and with other New York based permanent representations and stakeholders on Security Council and U.N.-related matters
  • Performance of various communication tasks

Requirements:

  • Academic credentials and a minimum of three years professional experience in a communications and/or policy advisor position
  • Experience and/or training as a journalist is an advantage
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in diplomatic language and U.N. jargon
  • Strong ability to understand the subtleties of political language and operating in a sensitive political context
  • Solid knowledge of the Swiss political system and Swiss foreign policy.
  • Accuracy and diligence when drafting and presenting, even under time pressure.
  • Ideally a native French speaker. An excellent command of English as a working language is essential, as well as a good knowledge or very good passive language skills of German. 
  • Strong social skills, resilience and an excellent ability to develop networks fast. 
  • High stress resistance and a readiness to work outside office hours when necessary.

Visa/Consular Officer (40% - 80%)

Start date: summer 2022, upon agreement

The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York covers all matters concerning consular relations and represents Swiss interests in the areas of political, economic, financial and legal affairs, as well as science, education and culture.

Job Description

  • conduct visa interviews
  • assess visa applications, preferably already with the training and rights to issue visas
  • understand and implement the current Schengen visa regulations
  • operate specific software in addition to standard programs like Word and Excel
  • respond to a variety of inquiries at the counter, on the phone, by e-mail as well as by regular mail
  • processing passport requests and applications
  • handling civil status matters
  • managing registration and de-registration procedures as well as address changes
  • various contingent assignments within the chancery
  • substitution and mutual support of team members is self-evident 

Minimum Qualifications

Excellent active skills in English and one Swiss national language. You are expected to work well within a team and to exhibit a work ethic that is focused on attention to details and a high degree of personal integrity. Furthermore, you should have a general knowledge of Switzerland. A completed business management education and computer literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet) are mandatory requirements. A few years of work experienced are required.

Project Manager (part-time, 60%)

The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York is looking for a Project Manager (part-time, 60%); Department of Economic Affairs and Communication, Public Diplomacy Division 

Starting date: Summer, 2022 (or upon agreement) 

The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York represents and promotes the interests of Switzerland and of Swiss citizens in its jurisdiction. The Public Diplomacy Division is seeking a qualified candidate for a part-time time position as Project Manager. The primary tasks are to support Switzerland’s public diplomacy efforts in New York through managing projects and events in the priority areas of Switzerland’s Strategy for Communication Abroad 21-24 and by developing creative content for social media communication. Our ideal candidate is proactive, creative, a digital native and has a strong background in project management and communications. 

Duties and Responsibilities (60% workload):

Project Management 40%

  • Development and implementation of projects and events in the field of public diplomacy to promote Switzerland’s image abroad, particularly in the areas of economy, innovation, sustainability and Swiss financial center and development; expansion of new event concepts in a hybrid set-up.
  • Maintaining and continuously expanding a network of contacts with relevant institutions and key individuals.

Social Media 20%

  • Development of creative content for the social media communication of the representation.
  • Social media planning and scheduling using Creator Studio, Hootsuite and in-app.
  • Filming and editing video content for social media, using tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro and other Adobe programs; creating graphic design elements, using tools like Canva.
  •  Additional duties beyond those listed here will be determined and assigned as needed.

Requirements:

  • A university degree in economics, communications or a related field such as public relations, marketing, or social sciences 
  • Previous work experience in project management, ideally related to economy, innovation, sustainability
  • Digital native with professional experience in social media and content creation (i.e. videos). Strong competencies navigating Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and others for content sharing and analytics. Full computer literacy with Microsoft Office
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (ideally a native English speaker) 
  • Knowledge in at least one of the national languages of Switzerland (German, French, Italian, Romansh)
  • Interest in Swiss culture; exposure to working in Switzerland / Europe or with Swiss / European companies in the US advantageous 
  • Very good organizational skills, high degree of personal integrity and trustworthiness
  • Able to multitask, work under pressure and pay attention to details
