Since the escalation of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023, Egypt has served as a vital humanitarian corridor, receiving over 8,000 injured Palestinians and 16,000 accompanying family members. All medical evacuees and their companions remain in Egypt, unable to return to Gaza due to ongoing insecurity and access restrictions. As medical evacuations continue, pressure on Egypt’s health system continue. The project strengthens access to specialized healthcare, mental health and psychosocial support, and cash assistance.

After more than 31 months of war, Sudan faces the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis. Over 30 million people need assistance, and 12 million have been forcibly displaced, including 4.3 million across borders - mainly to Egypt, Chad, and South Sudan. Inside Sudan, bureaucratic hurdles, financial collapse, market disruptions, and insecurity hinder aid efforts. Through its Regional Response Plan 2026 - Sudan, NRC aims to assist over 296,280 conflict-affected people, prioritizing those with the most severe needs.

Aswan and Greater Cairo have seen a sharp rise in displaced Sudanese arrivals, including unaccompanied children, placing heavy pressure on local services. This project delivers rapid, lifesaving and integrated services across child protection, mental health, education, and livelihoods while strengthening community-based organizations. Its goal is to meet urgent needs, reduce protection risks, and bolster the safety, dignity, and resilience of displaced Sudanese and host communities.

The Sudan conflict has become the world’s largest displacement and protection emergency. Since April 2023, nearly 7.3 million Sudanese remain displaced within Sudan and over 4.2 million across borders into seven host countries1. SDC supports UNHCR life-saving response efforts inside Sudan and across South Sudan, Egypt and Chad to help prevent further loss of life and uphold the safety and dignity of people affected by the conflict.

Young migrants, forcibly displaced persons (FDPs), and marginalized Egyptians face serious risks of exploitation, exclusion, and poverty. Many struggle to access livelihood opportunities and basic services. This project aims to reduce protection risks by enhancing employability and supporting inclusive protection services. The project also advocates for fair and inclusive policies that uphold the rights and dignity of all youth. At its core, the project promotes equity, resilience, and opportunity.

The project will contribute to market system development of the bio-based and agri-food, circular and sustainable energy value chains in Luxor, Qena, Sohag and Beni Suef (with a particular focus on women and youth). This will be done through capacity building/upskilling, creation of market linkages and integration of sustainble practices and policies to reduce poverty, mitigate climate change and reduce environmental degradation.

This contribution aims at supporting the Regional Refugee Response Plan and Government of Egypt’s combined efforts to respond to the arrival of refugees in the aftermath of the outbreak of conflict on the 15.4.2023 in Sudan. UNHCR’s emergency response focuses on the identification and reception of the most vulnerable new arrivals at prioritized points of entry, with the provision of life-saving support and specialized protection services.
Livelihoods for women in Upper Egypt

Women in Upper Egypt face significant barriers to economic participation due to discriminatory social norms and limited resources Combined with the region's economic challenges, this has created a pressing need to improve women livelihoods where over 60% are below the poverty line. The proposed project objective is to improve socio-economic conditions for women in Upper Egypt by increasing young women's employability through quality vocational training in the ICT and healthcare sectors and by providing social protection, assets transfer, financial inclusion and social integration for ultra poor female-headed households.

Sudan has become one the world worst humanitarian crisis. Nearly 18 months of war have turned it into the fastest growing displacement crisis. By the end of November 2024, an estimated 11.36 million people were internally displaced. In addition, more than 3.2 million people have fled across borders. Major bureaucratic and administrative impediments, financial collapse, market disruptions, and insecurity are hampering aid efforts. NRC plans to assist over 3.1 m conflict-affected people, focusing on those with severe needs and in hard-to-reach areas.
Contributions 2024 to ICRC Country Programs in protracted crises

The ICRC is the most important partner of SDC in the humanitarian field. About one third of the SDC Humanitarian Aid budget is allocated to the ICRC. The contribution of CHF 56 million to ICRC country programs reflects Switzerland’s interest to have a strong ICRC throughout the world and to contribute to alleviate the suffering of people affected by conflicts.

The project aims to improve income and contribute to poverty alleviation of 14000 Egyptian small older farmers and agricultural workers by building their ability to better respond to climate change using climate smart agriculture, improving market linkage and promoting entrepreneurship in selected villages in Upper Egypt.
