This year's UN General Assembly (UNGA), which runs from September 2025 to August 2026, will focus on the widespread upheaval in the UN system, whereby the tense financial situation and political changes are making global cooperation more difficult. These developments are also having a direct impact on International Geneva. The Federal Council is committed to credible multilateralism and represents Switzerland's interests as a host, donor and member state in discussions about UN reform.
Opening week of the 80th UNGA
The high-level week provides a unique opportunity for an exchange of views and for meetings with a wide range of stakeholders, including over 100 heads of state and government and foreign ministers from all over the world. On 22 September, President Keller-Sutter will attend the summit to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN. Also that day, she will attend an event to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the World Conference on Women – a key step towards global gender equality. On 24 September, Ms Keller-Sutter will deliver Switzerland's official address at the general debate.
Mr Cassis will attend the ministerial meeting on the protection of humanitarian personnel and put forward the Swiss position in the political statement, following on from UN Security Council Resolution 2730. He will also take part in an event on the Middle East organised by the International Peace Institute, and will represent Switzerland at a high-level meeting on missing persons in armed conflicts – a core concern of Swiss peacebuilding.
The UNGA is the broadest forum for dialogue among the governments of UN member states. It brings together 193 countries to discuss global challenges such as conflict resolution, peacebuilding, poverty reduction, sustainable development, respect for human rights and combating climate change.
