Mongolian journalists advocate for sustainable development

Local news, 07.12.2016

The media occupies a unique position in society, being able to inform the public about key matters of concern. This is particularly important in helping to shape public attitudes and behaviours in order to achieve national sustainable development objectives.

That is why SDC’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Project is partnering with the Mongolian media.

The ESD Project conducted a series of regional trainings in 2016 for more than 200 journalists and media specialists nationwide to help build their understanding of ESD approach, and sustainable and green development concepts.

“I realised that I didn’t fully understand sustainable development,” said T. Danaisuren, Director of Khongor Television in Bayankhongor aimag. “Environment, economics and society are so intertwined that it’s important for me to report on all these aspects in order to paint a complete picture for my audience.

“Our ancestors were wise and taught us to respect Mother Nature. There are many valuable nomadic traditions, such as filling in the holes after pulling out horse-tie poles when moving to the next camp.

“In my opinion it is an example of this very sustainable development philosophy that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

The trainings also provided regional journalists with an opportunity to share experiences, and introduced them to the latest tools and applications, such as infographics and interactive maps.

Following the trainings, they were able to incorporate what they had learnt into their work. Many launched discussions with local authorities, stimulating action for sustainable development and linking key concepts to rural development policies.

“I’m now committed to promoting eco-friendly products such as green buildings, green schools and eco-friendly households through my reports and programs,” said T. Danaisuren. “I will also advocate for and encourage youth to stop littering and to recycle products as much as possible.”

A total of 11 journalists were certified as national trainers for Sustainable Development by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in partnership with the ESD Project.
