Policy Advisor

The Embassy of Switzerland in The Hague is looking for a Policy Advisor in its multilateral affairs section.

The multilateral affairs section is responsible for defending Swiss interests and values in line with foreign policy priorities and objectives. As a member of several international institutions based in The Hague, Switzerland plays a significant role in the development and implementation of political decisions made in those organizations.

The activities of the Embassy focus primarily on international justice institutions (ICC, ICJ, PCA, HccH, TSL, MTPI) and chemical disarmament matters (OPCW). This position is a unique opportunity to work on a varied range of global issues and to develop a deep understanding of multilateral diplomacy and international organizations.


Under the guidance of the Head of the multilateral affairs section, the Policy advisor will carry out the following tasks:

  • Prepare formal and informal meetings held in international organizations in The Hague;
  • Actively participate in meetings, draft statements of the Swiss delegation, negotiate resolutions, write reports on meetings;
  • Liaise with authorities in Berne and with other delegations in the Hague;
  • Follow and analyze political, legal and technical developments in multilateral institutions;
  • Develop and implement projects and events to promote our objectives;
  • Coordinate informal networks of partners.


  • Education: University degree, preferably in international law, international relations, or a related discipline;
  • Experience: 1-2 years relevant professional experience; experience working for a Swiss Embassy or an International Organization would be an asset;
  • Languages: One of the official Swiss languages at native level and a good understanding of a second national language are required, plus a very good command of English;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Strong interest in Swiss foreign policy, diplomacy, negotiation and multilateral institutions;
  • Personal skills: flexible, well organized and rigorous, dynamic and outgoing.

Location: The Hague, Netherlands
Salary according to local conditions
Full time position (40 hours / week)
Start date: 01.03.2020 or to be agreed upon
