Ignazio Cassis visits South East Asia and Pacific region

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will travel to Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from 1 to 9 August 2023. The visits to Indonesia and Singapore will centre on the implementation of the Federal Council's South East Asia Strategy. In Australia and New Zealand, the focus will be on global challenges and strengthening bilateral relations. Mr Cassis will also use the trip to meet local Swiss communities in the four countries to mark 1 August celebrations.

Swiss government names new Ambassadors

The Swiss government (Federal Council) has approved the list of diplomatic staff transfers scheduled for 2014 submitted by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The changes will be made in accordance with the normal rate of transfers, to be communicated at the time of the decision by the Federal Council. The appointments of Heads of Mission take effect as soon as the authorities in the host country communicate their approval. The Federal Council takes this opportunity to express its gratitude to the Ambassadors due to retire for the services rendered.

Close ties over a great distance: Switzerland and New Zealand expand bilateral relations

On the first day of his visit to the Asia Pacific region, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter met the prime minister of New Zealand, John Key, and the country's foreign minister, Murray McCully. Mr Burkhalter signed a joint declaration with Mr McCully on the deepening of bilateral cooperation, in particular in consular matters. Furthermore, they agreed to hold regular meetings at ministerial level in the future. In his discussion with Mr Key, Mr Burkhalter appealed for improvements with regard to the pension entitlement of Swiss citizens living in New Zealand.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter undertakes official working visits to Australia, New Zealand and Vanuatu

From 25 to 28 October 2013, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will visit three states of the Asia-Pacific region. The meetings in Australia and New Zealand will be the first official visits by a Swiss foreign minister to these two states. And Vanuatu will receive a Swiss federal councillor for the first time at all. Political talks in Australia, New Zealand and Vanuatu will focus on strengthening bilateral relations with the three countries and establishing closer cooperation on multilateral issues such as sustainable development and climate change.
