Diaspora knowledge mobility project

Many members of the 2 million diaspora of Bosnia and Herzegovina are ready to contribute to the development of their country with their knowledge, skills and investments. Switzerland supports the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees in creating mechanisms for transfer of diaspora knowledge and skills to local development actors, scientific, research and educational institutions and students, which will contribute to Bosnia’s economic and social development.

ACT-2 improves citizens’ participation in decision making at the local and national level through and with the support of civil society organizations (CSOs). Selected mission-driven CSOs are supported to strengthen constituency, diversify funding and effectively engage in advocacy. They jointly advocate with complementary CSOs and informal groups to increase impact and legitimacy. CSOs initiate dialogue and collaboration with local authorities, private sector and media to achieve development results.
Moldova: Ma Implic - Project on civic engagement in local governance

Moldova is firmly committed to improve governance and service delivery at the local level through a local governance reform, which is also a necessary step in view of the possible accession to the European Union. This project will support the Moldovan national authorities in advancing the local governance reform, and the local authorities in designing and implementing more inclusive and transparent local governance practices and a more efficient delivery of various public services.
North Africa Cultural Program (NACP)

By developing a Regional Cultural Program, Switzerland seeks to facilitate intercultural dialogue and exchange as a foundation for peace and conflict sensitive development in North Africa and to foster artistic expression as a driver of change in support to the challenges of transition. This will promote peaceful coexistence, political stability and social cohesion in the region, hence providing alternatives for the fulfillment of North African youth in their own societies.
Integrated Seed Systems Development Africa

Smallholders in Africa need access to affordable quality seeds of the best varieties, especially in fragile and conflict affected states. The phase 2 of the Integrated Seed Systems in Africa, a successful Swiss supported network of seed professionals, focuses on Seed Systems in the Humanitarian, Development, Peace-Nexus, aiming to strengthen resilience to shocks via the development and mainstreaming of state of-the-art tools, methodologies, and policies, adapted to fragile and conflict-affected states.

Innovative finance for mine action

To date an estimated 25% of Ukrainian territory has been exposed to active conflict and may be contaminated with landmines and explosive ordnances. Under the umbrella of UNDP, experts from the finance sector and the mine action sector will assess ways to involve private investors in the long-term financing of mine action in Ukraine. The UK, the Netherlands and Switzerland contribute to the financing of this study.

Contribution to UN OCHA’s office oPt for the coordination of the “Flash Appeal Occupied Palestinian Territory”

SDC allocates an additional credit to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) for responding to urgent needs generated in the framework of the ongoing Israel and Gaza crisis. Funding to UN OCHA for oPt enables the office to continue coordinating the “Flash Appeal Occupied Palestinian Territory” and, as a result, to actively contribute to responding and providing immediate protection and life-saving assistance to people affected by the current crisis. In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises.

Localization of Environment in Humanitarian Action

The abilities of local humanitarian responders who are facing additional challenges due to environmental and climate issues will be strengthened by providing specialized and locally contextualized trainings for integrating environmental concerns into humanitarian efforts. A sharp escalation of the Gaza crisis has left the entire population in desperate and catastrophic conditions. Hundreds of thousands of people are crammed into overcrowded shelters and hospitals, with food and water running out. The World Food Programme (WFP) has provided emergency food and cash assistance to over 630,000 people across Gaza and the West Bank and continues providing such assistance in the framework of the renewed crisis. SDC contributes to WFP’s efforts in emergency response and life-saving assistance.

A renewed spike of violence and escalation of hostilities are currently affecting Israel and oPt during Q4 of 2023, with possible further regional implications yet to be determined. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. Together with Red Cross and Red Crescent member National Societies, it plays a major role in responding to humanitarian needs, including in the Near and Middle East. Switzerland intends to contribute to the IFRC’s Middle East Crisis Emergency Appeal for a regional humanitarian response, as well as to PRCS’s oPt emergency appeal and to MDA’s response in Israel.

RISE - Resilience and Innovation Support and Empowerment Project

The initiative strengthens the economic resilience of Yemeni entrepreneurs and micro / small business with a view of enhancing livelihood opportunities of Yemenis. The initiative further responds to the protracted crisis in Yemen, which requires the strengthening of livelihoods for the Yemeni people and a shift towards enhancing local capacities.
