Strengthening Smallholders through MVIWATA

Over the last 21 years small scale farmer men and women have organized themselves from village to national level in MVIWATA, the Tanzanian Network of Small Scale Farmers’ Groups. SDC’s program contribution to MVIWATA aims at strengthening the capacity of the network to empower its members technically, economically and politically in farming matters in order to contribute to independent problem solving and trigger more pro-poor agricultural sector policies and growth.

Engaging Stakeholders in Environmental Conservation Phase II (ESEC II)

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) is a poverty-driven phenomena that contributes importantly to rural job creation, income generation and poverty reduction. However, ASM’s contribution to sustainable local development is limited by its past and current practices leading to significant environmental degradation. ESEC II therefore aims to enhance ASM’s contribution to local development by making it an environmentally responsible activity, thereby benefitting 230,000 rural citizens with a healthier and improved environment.

UNICEF: Protection of Syrian children and host communities (PRO); Jordan

The deteriorating situation in Syria is resulting in more refugees fleeing their country into Jordan. The number of registered Syrian refugees or pending registration exceeded 500,000 refugees, more than half of them are children. Many of these children are not going to schools for various reasons and some are getting into child labour. UNICEF through this intervention aims to ensure that Syrian children, their families and host communities are provided access to appropriate psychosocial and other protection services. This project is part of the 20m funding.

Subnational Democratic Development Program (SNDD)

Cambodia has developed a 10-year Sub-national Democratic Development (SNDD) reform program. SDC supports the National Committee for Democratic Development (NCDD) in the implementation of SNDD reform program, in particular, strengthening commune and district level functionality. This will be key for ensuring sustainable poverty reduction, promoting access to better quality services as well as to ensuring social harmony and stability in the post violent conflict country. SDC joins Sida and EU in a basket fund.

Safeguard Young People – Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRHR)

The UNFPA Safeguard Young People Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights/HIV (SRHR) programme will contribute to the reduction of HIV infections and improved sexual and reproductive health status of young women and men aged 10 to 24 in 8 Southern African countries1. UNFPA will scale up SRHR/HIV prevention models in order to equip young people with knowledge, skills and values to protect themselves from HIV infections and capacitate member states to improve the legislative environment to address young people’s health issues.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative support in Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia

Thanks to one of the world's largest coordinated health campaigns, the number of polio cases has been reduced globally by 99%. However the disease may at any time recover its strength when the remaining cases are not eradicated. The support of global polio initiative in the high-risk countries, Chad, DRC and Ethiopia contributes to a polio-free world and strengthens the local health services by transferring good practice from this disease specific program to other health priorities in these countries.

Seed and Knowledge Initiative (SKI)

The project contributes to strengthening and consolidating local knowledge and practices on seeds for better resilience. In parallel, research is conducted on community seed systems and the interface between the formal and informal seed sectors. This will inform advocacy strategies and influence the policy-making and scientific narrative for improved seed and food security in the SADC region (Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Mozambique, South Africa).

Un largo camino: habilitar a Somalia para afrontar y superar las crisis

Con el objetivo de mejorar las condiciones de vida de las poblaciones más vulnerables de Somalia, la COSUDE contribuye con 6 millones de CHF al Programa de resiliencia de la Organización de Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación, de tres años, que forma parte del programa general de la FAO para Somalia. Con innovadores instrumentos de monitoreo y medidas de reducción de riesgos, y mediante estrechos partenariados, el programa allana el camino para la transición de las intervenciones humanitarias al desarrollo sostenible en grandes partes de Somalia, incluida la región centro-sur donde el acceso a la población necesitada está muy limitado.

Strengthening the prevention and preparedness systems

SDC has a long standing cooperation with the Georgian Government (GoG) in the field of DRR on local, regional and central levels. The new government is showing more commitment in addressing DRR and climate change issues. With the current project, disaster management efforts of GoG are supported through the introduction of methodologies of risk mapping and cost benefit analysis (prevention) and rolling out of the certified vocational training for municipal fire fighter and rescuer (preparedness).

Food security knowledge platform and policy dialogue India

India, a potent emerging economy of 1.3 billion people, has an endemic food insecurity affecting hundreds of millions of people today and is home of half of the world’s malnourished children. Complex societal structures and political deficiencies are part of the challenge. The present project aims at increasing the policy coherence for effective action to improve food and nutrition security. It will do so by bringing new evidence on the fundamental problems to be tackled, and by stimulating the dialogue between people and institutions engaged in poverty reduction, agricultural production, food distribution and economic development in the States of Gujarat, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Their joint engagement for better policies should help reduce food insecurity sustainably.
