Support to the Reform of the Northern Agriculture and Forestry College in Laos (SURAFCO)

Innovation and reform of the agriculture sector is necessary for Lao PDR to achieve socioeconomic growth and graduate from its status of Least Developed Country. SDC has worked to strengthen Lao agriculture and forestry colleges since 2009, in response to a growing need for highly skilled professionals, who can help farmers in improving their practices and escape poverty.

Sanitation, Hygiene, Infant Nutrition Efficacy Project (SHINE)

The Sanitation, Hygiene, Infant Nutrition Efficacy Project (SHINE) intents to reduce infant mortality and improve primary health care in rural Zimbabwe. Four different types of public health programs will be compared in two districts of the Midlands province in order to identify the most effective in combating child stunting and anemia. SOC's earmarked contribution to this project will benefit 2,400 households with pregnant women and focus on delivering soft component (knowledge and best hygiene practices) of the WASH module.

Short Term Food Security Support in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is on a path of transition in which SDC supports the increase of food security, the strengthening of livelihoods and self-reliance of the most vulnerable populations. In the past agricultural season the production fell by 33% and 19% of the rural population will be unable to meet their basic food requirements. In this context, the support to WFP combines emergency oriented short term targeted relief assistance with an approach oriented towards medium term solutions to food insecurity.

Quality Life despite Disease

The project aims at providing a dignified environment for seniors with dementia in the Special Needs Home in Ostrava by reconstructing the attic of an existing Day-Care Centre. In addition, constructional adjustments of the whole building will permit to provide an adequate barrier-free infrastructure for the clients. Together with the necessary training of staff, this will allow for introducing modern care methods for seniors with dementia. Furthermore, the capacity of the in-home social services will be increased by the procurement of additional vehicles.

Post-2015 work (UNDP)

Switzerland takes an active role in the international debate on the Post-2015 framework. One important opportunity to influence the discussion is to support the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Post-2015 work. In 2013 UNDP will organize eleven thematic and over 100 country consultations. Switzerland will take the lead in the consultation on population dynamic, with a focus on migration, and the co-lead for the consultation on water and will support the country consultations.

Protection of Orphans and Vulnerable children in Zimbabwe

The project aims at strengthening the social protection systems in Zimbabwe in order to reduce widespread household poverty, provide for basic needs, and give care and support to the most vulnerable children, in particular those affected by HIV/AIDS. Zimbabwe being currently in a process of transition and recovery, Switzerland has chosen to participate in a trust fund managed by UNICEF, to avoid disbursements or procurements through the (still weak) government system.

Las principales víctimas de décadas de conflictos bélicos y genocidio son las mujeres y los niños. El programa «Seth Koma» del Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF) promueve los derechos de las mujeres y los niños en el marco de una reforma nacional de democratización y descentralización. El proyecto apoya la creación de comités de mujeres y niños a nivel de los municipios y los distritos. La COSUDE participa en el programa mediante una contribución financiera única.

Despite the highest water availability in the Maghreb, Morocco is faced with severe overexploitation of water resources that threatens sustainable economic and social development, i.e. irrigated agriculture and water supply. The Integrated Water Resource Management project is in-line with Moroccan policy priorities and aims to develop the required competencies of water sector institutions while also harnessing rain and wastewater as alternative water resources for the future.

Empowering Women Migrant Workers In Asia (EWMWA)

In Southeast Asia women who migrate for work are exposed to high risks, which range from gender-based discrimination to exploitation and severe human rights violations. UN Women’s Regional Program On Empowering Women Migrant Workers In Asia (EWMWA) aims to empower vulnerable women migrants in a gender-responsive way and to strengthen their access to effective legal protection. A specific focus in the ASEAN region includes Lao PDR, Vietnam and Cambodia as major sending countries.

Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU): strengthening Information Management for More Effective Humanitarian and Development Assistance in Myanmar

In an environment of rapidly growing commitments of development partners, as well as greater availability of poverty data and human development indicators from government agencies and project implementers, the Myanmar Information Management Unit, a project hosted in UNDP, provides a body of reliable and comprehensive information and resources in accessible user-friendly formats for humanitarian and development aid planners to target interventions, avoid replication, and increase aid effectiveness.

Hygiene, Sanitation and Water Fund

About 20 percent of Bangladesh’s population has no access to safe drinking water; some 40 percent are deprived of improved sanitation facilities. The Hygiene, Sanitation and Water Fund, set up in 2007 by the leading international development agencies, partners with competent local government institutions to provide efficient and state-of-the-art WatSan solutions for millions of Bangladeshi households. The present proposal undertakes to co-finance the successful Fund for the period of 2012 through 2015.

Reducing Health Risk Factors in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Chronic diseases are the main cause of death and disability in Bosnia and Herzegovina, entailing substantial costs for the country. Chronic diseases are to a large extent influenced by unhealthy lifestyles, which means that they can be prevented by changing behaviors. The project will facilitate an increased focus of country’s health system on preventive care, reducing behavioural risks factors among the population. In the longer term, strengthened prevention should lead to a reduction in chronic diseases and significant cost savings.
