Tajikistan is the poorest country of the former Soviet Union and is marked by a sluggish transition and fragility patterns. This project contributes to improving the Rasht Valley (the most neglected and fragile area of the country) population’s quality of life through better provision of and access to water and health services, as well as increased resilience against natural hazards. Moreover, it enhances professional skills and empowers the local population in planning and investing in its communities.

Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia are strongly affected by migration. Local authorities are interested in acquiring the necessary skills to better use this migration for local development. Therefore, the SDC Global Program for Migration and Development has tasked the Joint Migration for Development Initiative of the European Commission and the UNDP with providing local authorities in selected municipalities with the know-how on cooperating with other local governments and civil society organizations in order to use the potential of migration for the sustainable development of their municipalities.

Improving Access to Basic Health Care in Mountain Regions of Tajikistan - Rasht Valley

Tajikistan is the poorest among the former Soviet Union countries with a GDP per capita of US $ 820 in 2010. Only 2% of GDP is allocated to the health care sector. Through the rehabilitation and equipment of deteriorated health infrastructure, the project improves access to health services and thus ultimately contributes to improving the health status of the population in the project areas. By focusing on the most neglected and fragile areas, Switzerland supports the efforts of re-connecting the communities and the State and thus reducing conflict potential and strengthening stability in Tajikistan.

Water Resource Platforms

Water scarcity is an increasing concern for many governments in developing countries. They face challenges in managing water resources to safely deliver the water needed to fuel growth, as well as for humans and the environment. This concept note proposes to work with three global Water Resources platforms (WRG, WEF, 3GI) to incorporate perspectives from the private sector and economic growth into the water dialogue. In addition, the private sector is concerned to use water more efficiently and to bring in its know-how in the water sector.

In 2012, the Nicaraguan State has approved a Comprehensive Law to combat Violence against Women. The law intends to promote violence prevention, improve judicial procedures and enhance access of victims to justice. The project contributes to the building of new institutional capacities required to implement the law. It supports the appropriation of the new legal framework by the authorities and the public.

Flood protection with mobile dams

Upper Tisza River Region is frequently and heavily flooded and has sudden torrents and rainfalls. In a pilot project, the National Directorate General of Disaster Management will purchase and test a mobile dike system that can serve as a rapid response, cost efficient and environmental friendly device. As this system is under certain conditions faster available than conventional flood protection with sandbags, precious time can be gained to protect the inhabitants, property and goods.

L’objectif du programme BASAL (Bases Ambientales para la Sostenibilidad Alimentaria Local) est de réduire les vulnérabilités du secteur agricole au changement climatique, en particulier au niveau local.

Prevention and management of natural disasters in Miskolc city

Miskolc city has been hardly hit by three important flooding due to heavy rainfall in 2010, leaving behind important damages at watercourses. For this reason, this Project reconstructs and maintains two out of the city’s twelve creeks and completes the drainage system in a low-lying township. 2’700 inhabitants living in the concerned areas will thus be protected from future flooding.

Le Programme Régional d’Education et Formation des Populations Pastorales (PREPP) a été formulé avec des organisations d’éleveurs d’Afrique de l’Ouest ; il vise à satisfaire leurs droit et besoins éducatifs afin de réduire leur marginalisation sociale, politique et économique. Cinq zones transfrontalières sont ciblées tenant compte de: la forte transhumance, l’existence de conflits, l’accès aléatoire à l’éducation et le manque d’appui. La dimension transfrontalière permet d’influencer les politiques éducatives nationales et sous-régionales.
