Support to St. Francis Hospital in Ifakara

SDC plans to support health services and management improvement, and address the role of the hospital as a place for practical training and clinical research. The project would focus primarily on improving health care and look for synergies between St. Francis Hospital, the Ifakara Health Institute and the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health, and the Swiss institutions that support them (SDC, Novartis Foundation, SwissTPH and Solidarmed). During the entry proposal period, SDC and partners will have an opportunity to explore which organisational option would best serve these objectives. Refurbishment of the pediatric ward will also be undertaken and equipment provided.

Climate Change Adaptation in China: Monitoring and Early Warning of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods in the Area of the Yarkant River

With Climate Change, melting ice from glaciers is heightening the risk for Glacier Lake Outburst Floods, and changing river flow patterns. The present Sino-Swiss cooperation aims at improving the management of high flood risk of Yarkant River, strengthen monitoring capacities of the glaciers in the upper catchment area, and support Water Risk Management at highest official level in China. High emphasis is put on exchanging knowledge with international networks.

Radioactive Waste Disposal

The objectives of the project are to make specific contributions to the safety assessment of the future radioactive waste repositories through an understanding of relevant retention/retardation mechanisms and processes, and to provide the necessary models and databases. Investigation of the geochemistry of radioactive waste disposal systems. The goal of the project is the demonstration of long-term isolation technology in underground repository.

Support for the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC)

A long-standing strategic partnership is developing between Switzerland and Malta with the aim of building confidence and promoting peace and stability in the Mediterranean Region. Switzer-land supports the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) through a resident Swiss professor and scholarships for junior diplomats from North Africa and the Middle East to take MEDAC's Master of Diplomacy.

Grain Post-Harvest Loss Prevention GPLP

The SDC support to Grain Post Harvest Management in Tanzania is going to increase rural household food security and improve livelihoods through the promotion of better storage methods using metal silos and other improved postharvest storage technologies at household level. The project reduces postharvest grain losses leading to increased availability and quality of food for home consumption and income generation by addressing systemic impediments to improved household grain storage.

Schengen Issues

The project was aimed to strenghten the personnel capacities of all stake-holders concerning Schengen topics with a main focus on SIS and SIRENE in view of Romania's joining Schengen in March 2011. Activities included flyers for police officers, posters for the general public and counselling of the SIRENE Bureau by fedpol.

Motorable Local Roads Bridge Programme (MLRBP) – Phase I

Lack of access aggravated by absence of bridges and adequately maintained local roads is one of the primary reasons for high incidence of poverty in Nepal. The increased confidence of the Government of Nepal in the Swiss Technical Assistance has led the Government to double its budget in this sector, bearing also in mind the need to ensure easy access for reconstruction to the earthquakes affected areas. As part of Switzerland’s contribution to reconstruction, SDC will support the preparation of 100 additional bridges until the end of 2015.
