The tasks of the embassy

As the official Swiss representation to the Holy See, the Embassy helps to deepen and realise the potential for cooperation in the common foreign policy priorities of the two states, such as the promotion of peace, human rights and international human law as well as sustainable development. The Embassy also represents Switzerland's interests in domestic politics, finance, law, science, education and culture. It also looks after relations with the Pontifical Swiss Guard.

Switzerland and the Holy See have similar values and interests in several areas. The promotion of peace, the fight against the death penalty and sustainable development are just a few of the most important. The decision of the Swiss Federal Council on 1 October 2021 to open an Embassy to the Holy See and the appointment of a permanent Ambassador as of the summer of 2022 will enable the Swiss government to respond to the increase in diplomatic tasks that has been observed for many years and to strengthen the potential for bilateral cooperation in the priority areas of the Confederation's foreign policy. The presence of a permanent diplomatic representation in the heart of the Holy See allows for a permanent dialogue on political and social issues of primary importance for bilateral relations.

The establishment of the new embassy also allows for closer cooperation with the Swiss Papal Guard and the small Swiss community. Since 1506, this force of more than 100 Swiss soldiers has been protecting the Pope and his residence.

In addition, the Embassy promotes cooperation in the fields of science and education, with a particular focus on strengthening collaboration between the two countries in research and innovation.

In the area of culture, the Embassy promotes mutual understanding and implements Switzerland's cultural policy. In particular, it strengthens contacts with and between relevant cultural institutions in Switzerland and the country of residence or artists. Events organized by the Embassy or with its support aim to give greater visibility to Switzerland's cultural action and to build bridges between different cultures.

With regard to the media, the embassy acts as an interface between the Swiss government and the official representations in the host country and the national and international media in the host country. It supports the work of journalists working for Swiss media.
