SSD, Hope Africa South Sudan - HASS: Build resilience, self-reliance and coexistence in Aweil West County.
The intervention allows SDC to pilot the promotion of localization agenda in fragile situation by working with local and national partners (HASS) to address food security, livelihood and provide protection services (GBV prevention) to returnees, IDPs and host community affected by the Sudan crisis in Aweil West County, Northern Bhar el Gazal State, South Sudan.

Hintergrund | The humanitarian situation in South Sudan remains protracted and is further exacerbated by the impact of the Sudan conflict. Norther Bhar El Gazal which include Aweil West currently is hosting 59,586 returnees, 32,023 IDPs & 13,192 refugees according to durable solution report 2024.1 The newly arrived populations are settling in areas already facing significant service deficits, further eroding the coping capacities of these communities. Food security and protection are the most faced needs driven by economic downturn, displacement, climatic shocks and limited livelihood opportunities. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report 2024, in the period of December 2024 to March 2025, Aweil West County the targeted area of this project, was estimated to have 106’000 people facing IPC phase 3 or above (Crisis or worse) food insecurity situation2. Additionally, South Sudan is grappling with a severe protection crisis (i.e high level of violence, including conflictrelated sexual violence, gender-based violence (GBV) which is also prevalent in Aweil West. To address this multifaceted crisis, an integrated Protection and Food Security/Livelihoods approach is essential. |
