Biological Papaya Pest Control in West
01.11.2012
- 31.10.2017
Papaya and other fruit production represent an important source of income and part of the daily diet for millions of family farms across West and Central Africa. Different fruit species are threatened by the recent introduction of an exotic mealybug, which reduces fruit production by up to 90%. The project supports a biological pest control project of the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture to release a parasitic wasp, which is known to dramatically reduce mealybug infection rates, thus reducing harvest losses permanently.

Rural microinsurance
01.11.2012
- 31.10.2020
Micro insurance is recognised as a useful tool for poverty reduction. However, costs for developing micro insurance products are too high for the private sector to assume them alone. SDC will share this risk with the PROFIN Foundation , who will validate the technical, legal and financial feasibility of commercialising agricultural micro insurances in Bolivia. With two pilots, this initiative will reach more than 1000 vulnerable men and women, who do not have access to adequate risk-management tools.
