Inception of the Institute for Forensic Psychiatry Sokolac

Consequences of the war in the former Yugoslavia are felt in BiH until today. A significant part of the population suffers from mental health problems. In line with the European Convention on Human Rights, people with mental disorders committing crimes have the right to adequate treatment in custody. SDC and SECO therefore support the opening of the first Institute for Forensic Psychiatry in BiH, from whose services up to 200 convicts with mental disorders from across BiH will benefit.

Improving access to safe drinking water systems and hygiene practices in mountain regions of Tajikistan – Rasht Valley

Despite sufficient water resources available in Tajikistan, access to safe drinking water remains an important challenge in the country. The project will focus on improving access to safe drinking water for people in mountain areas through the installation or rehabilitation of drinking water systems. It will cover 50 villages with a total population of approximately 45,000 people, thus also contributing to a reduction in water borne diseases in the targeted regions. By focusing on the most neglected and fragile areas, Switzerland supports the efforts of re-connecting the communities and the State and thus of reducing conflict potential and strengthening stability in Tajikistan.

Integrated Health and Habitat Improvement in the Rasht Valley, Tajikistan

Tajikistan is the poorest country of the former Soviet Union and is marked by a sluggish transition and fragility patterns. This project contributes to improving the Rasht Valley (the most neglected and fragile area of the country) population’s quality of life through better provision of and access to water and health services, as well as increased resilience against natural hazards. Moreover, it enhances professional skills and empowers the local population in planning and investing in its communities.

Local Migration Governance

Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia are strongly affected by migration. Local authorities are interested in acquiring the necessary skills to better use this migration for local development. Therefore, the SDC Global Program for Migration and Development has tasked the Joint Migration for Development Initiative of the European Commission and the UNDP with providing local authorities in selected municipalities with the know-how on cooperating with other local governments and civil society organizations in order to use the potential of migration for the sustainable development of their municipalities.

Transparent Governance for Water, Sanitation and Health - GoTAS

The objective of this project, which builds on Swiss Cooperation extensive experience in Local Governance, Water and Sanitation and Health Promotion in Mozambique, is to improve the living conditions of the population in the North of the country through increasing access and use of WatSan infrastructures, strengthening the local governance system, and reinforcing the links between Health promotion and WatSan regarding hygiene and sanitation for an increased impact on the health status of the women and men.

Improving Access to Basic Health Care in Mountain Regions of Tajikistan - Rasht Valley

Tajikistan is the poorest among the former Soviet Union countries with a GDP per capita of US $ 820 in 2010. Only 2% of GDP is allocated to the health care sector. Through the rehabilitation and equipment of deteriorated health infrastructure, the project improves access to health services and thus ultimately contributes to improving the health status of the population in the project areas. By focusing on the most neglected and fragile areas, Switzerland supports the efforts of re-connecting the communities and the State and thus reducing conflict potential and strengthening stability in Tajikistan.

Water Resource Platforms

Water scarcity is an increasing concern for many governments in developing countries. They face challenges in managing water resources to safely deliver the water needed to fuel growth, as well as for humans and the environment. This concept note proposes to work with three global Water Resources platforms (WRG, WEF, 3GI) to incorporate perspectives from the private sector and economic growth into the water dialogue. In addition, the private sector is concerned to use water more efficiently and to bring in its know-how in the water sector.

Prevention of domestic and sexual violence and improvement of access to justice for its victims in Nicaragua

In 2012, the Nicaraguan State has approved a Comprehensive Law to combat Violence against Women. The law intends to promote violence prevention, improve judicial procedures and enhance access of victims to justice. The project contributes to the building of new institutional capacities required to implement the law. It supports the appropriation of the new legal framework by the authorities and the public.

Flood protection with mobile dams

Upper Tisza River Region is frequently and heavily flooded and has sudden torrents and rainfalls. In a pilot project, the National Directorate General of Disaster Management will purchase and test a mobile dike system that can serve as a rapid response, cost efficient and environmental friendly device. As this system is under certain conditions faster available than conventional flood protection with sandbags, precious time can be gained to protect the inhabitants, property and goods.

Support to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territory

SDC engagement in the occupied Palestinian territory focuses on the respect and promotion of International Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law. SDC support to the activities of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territory will allow the institution to strengthen its capacities in terms of legal analysis, communication and advocacy, particularly on East Jerusalem, and to fully implement its mandate, entrusted by the Human Rights Council.

BASAL - Bases Environnementales pour la Sécurité Alimentaire Locale (Bases Ambientales para la Sostenibilidad Alimentaria Local)

A Cuba, la mise en place de mesures d’adaptation aux effets du changement climatique dans le secteur agricole se révèle fondamentale pour réduire les importations d’aliments, qui couvrent 80% des besoins alimentaires de la population. L’objectif du programme BASAL (Bases Ambientales para la Sostenibilidad Alimentaria Local) est de réduire les vulnérabilités du secteur agricole au changement climatique, en particulier au niveau local.
