This year Mongolia and Switzerland are celebrating a special and happy occasion commemorating diplomatic relations between our two countries. Almost exactly 60 years ago, Switzerland and Mongolia formally established diplomatic relations.

Switzerland was Mongolia’s first Western trading partner in the late 1950s, mainly due to the pioneering commercial activity of a textile company in Zurich. Switzerland eventually established diplomatic relations with the Democratic Republic of Mongolia on the 22nd of May, 1964. Since then, throughout the years, our bilateral relations have been characterized by mutual trust and a true spirit of partnership and friendship. Despite our geographical distance and differences in size—Mongolia is 40 times bigger than Switzerland—our countries are both landlocked nations and share many similarities that go beyond being known for their wild and beautiful landscapes.

Our people share a strong appreciation of tradition and culture and a strong affinity with nature. Switzerland, although so tied to the mountains, are fascinated by the boundless nature of the steppes, Mongolian herding traditions, and innovative ways of developing and simultaneously preserving authenticity. These are almost psychological traits that unite us.

In collaboration with the Mongol Post company, the Switzerland is honored by the issuance of a special postage stamp marking the 60th anniversary. This stamp, adorned with the traditional musical instruments of our two nations, serves as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry that binds us together. Music, as we all know, transcends boundaries. It is a language understood by all, regardless of background, culture, or geography. Just as the alphorn once echoed across the Swiss Alps, connecting distant communities, so too does music unite us today. It bridges divides, fosters harmony, and forges connections that endure the test of time.

Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Mr. Ankhbayar Nyamdorj opened the launch ceremony and said that “Mongolia has a tradition of issuing special postage stamps to commemorate the decennial anniversaries of diplomatic relations.” State Secretary Ankhbayar expressed confidence that bilateral relations and cooperation between Mongolia and Switzerland would further expand.

The commemorative postage stamp of the “60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations Between Mongolia and Switzerland” depict Khuiten, the highest peak (4374 m) of Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain range and one of the famous mountains of the Alps, the Matterhorn (4,478 m), and Tsuur players and Alphorn players dressed in traditional costumes, eagles flying in the sky, the national flowers of two countries-Edelweiss and the 60th anniversary logo.

Member of the National Council of Switzerland and President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council, Mr. Laurent Wehrli said in his remarks, “Although Mongolia and Switzerland are geographically far apart, we have overcome many challenges and have expanded the fruitful relations and cooperation between our two countries. The national musical instruments, Tsuur and Alphorn, depicted on the commemorative postage stamps symbolize bridging any divide, strengthening of harmony, and friendship to stand the test of time.”

Switzerland is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, cutting-edge technologies and innovation, and rich banking heritage. This explains why we find ourselves filled with pride and gratitude today. The issuance of a special commemorative silver banknote by the Bank of Mongolia marks a momentous occasion: the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and the Switzerland.

One tangible result of successful cooperation between the Bank of Mongolia and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The formal gold supply chain for artisanal and small-scale mining was decentralized by establishing two one-stop service centers in two Mongolian provinces.

As celebrate six decades of diplomatic ties, Mongolia and Switzerland reaffirm their unwavering commitment to deepening cooperation and fostering friendship. This anniversary is a testament to the enduring values and aspirations that unite us and guide our shared vision for the future.

Embedded in this special silver banknote is a profound message: a declaration to the world that Switzerland and Mongolia stand firmly for peace. Indeed, peace is the cornerstone of our collective well-being, resonating deeply with the touching verses inscribed on the front of this banknote.
