Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development through the Youth Advisory Board
The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) gives young people the opportunity to include the voices of youth in the Swiss Cooperation Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Interventions will better reflect and address the needs and challenges of young people, increasing their impact and relevance. At the same time, YAB members improve their critical thinking, develop ways of articulating important messages to decision makers and influencing policies. They become empowered to actively engage in the development processes in the country and shape their society.
Nearly half of young BiH citizens are contemplating emigration, either temporarily or permanently - the result of little economic opportunities and a loss of trust in the country’s governance and political institutions. 22% of young people in BiH are unemployed, while one of five is searching for employment for more than five years, and half of the unemployed youth for more than two. The Competitiveness Report of the Global Economic Forum ranks Bosnia and Herzegovina third in terms of brain drain in proportion to the number of its population. Society generally tends to see youth of BiH as passive and lethargic. At the same time, adults hesitate to give opportunities to youth to participate in shaping decision making and development processes.
