Associations of mental health services users in Bosnia and Herzegovina organized a conference titled „Dignity in Mental Health – Psychological First Aid for All“ in Sarajevo today. The conference was held on International Mental Health Day under the auspices of Association XY, Ministry of Health of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Republika Srpska. It was organized within the Mental Health Project in BiH, supported by the Government of Switzerland.

Raising awareness about the mental disorders and their influence on the population, presenting the examples of the good practices and promoting service users' initiatives in the mental health field was the main aim of today’s gathering.

The conference was opened by the conference organization board members Vahid Đulović, Association Fenix from Tuzla, Ružica Atanacković, Association Zajedno from Banja Luka, Barbara Dätwyler Scheuer, Director of Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in BiH, Goran Čerkez, MD, Assistant Minister of Health for international cooperation and coordination of the developmental strategies in Federation of BiH, and Dženita Hrelja Hasečić, Director of the Mental Health Project in BiH at Association XY.

Honorary guests and main speakers of the conference were world renowned experts in the field of mental health Professor Norman Sartorius from Switzerland, and Professor Paolo Serra of Italy. More than 120 professionals in the field of mental health and mental health service users participated at the conference and learned more about programs for reducing stigma and discrimination within the Mental Health Project. Personal stories of successful recovery of people with mental disorders were also shared during the conference.

The Government of Switzerland has been a partner to entity ministries of health in improving mental health care services in BiH since 2009. So far, 15 million BAM has been granted for the mental health care reform through technical, financial and expert support. 74 Community-based Mental Health Care Centers in BiH and associations and self-help groups of mental health service users in 29 municipalities have been supported in providing of an increased scope of quality mental health services.

“The Mental Health Project is about improving the lives of people with mental disorders – by enabling their better access to mental health care services at the community level, by strengthening the quality and scope of these services, and by improving conditions for respect of rights of persons with mental disorders and their families. The involvement of persons with mental disorders in all reform interventions is a core principle of the Project and seen as key for success of the reform”, said Barbara Dätwyler Scheuer, Director of Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in BiH.

Today’s conference provided a valuable insights into the personal experiences of mental health service users and know how in community work for fighting stigma and discrimination of persons with mental health disorders, respecting the human rights of persons with mental disorders to dignified life.
