Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Switzerland in Ottawa.
Our site is designed to help you find quick and informative answers to your questions about Switzerland or this diplomatic mission, as well as Swiss-Canadian bilateral relations. The primary mission of this representation is to promote and protect the interests of Switzerland and of its citizens, not only in Canada but in The Bahamas as well. Its role is also to foster the excellent relations that exist between Switzerland and these two countries.
Diplomatic relations between our two countries officially began in 1945, establishing an enduring friendship. Historical ties between our two nations go back to the early 17th century. Canada has always been an important destination for Swiss emigrants. Today, there are almost 45’000 Swiss citizens living in Canada, many of whom actively organize to keep their Swiss traditions alive. Based on the people-to-people contacts, the bilateral ties cover the whole range of human activities. Canada and Switzerland share common values, such as democracy, human rights, gender equality, diversity and federalism. They are trusted partners, cooperating in areas such as science and innovation.
In addition to the Embassy in Ottawa, the Swiss diplomatic network in Canada comprises also the Consulates general in Montreal and Vancouver. The Embassy does not have a consular section. All the consular matters are handled by the Consulates general. They are the first interlocutors for the Swiss communities in Canada and in The Bahamas. The Swiss Business Hub is based in Montreal and promotes commercial ties between both countries.
I hope that you will enjoy visiting the embassy website and that you will find it helpful. I am grateful for any suggestions, observations or questions you wish to provide.
Thank you for your visit.
