JOR UNICEF: Increased Access to Quality and Inclusive Education in Syrian Refugee Camps


This intervention aims to enhance access to and quality of education for Syrian refugee children, ensuring a supportive and conducive learning environment  across the main Syrian refugee camps in Jordan. Switzerland, along with other donors,  contributes to this UNICEF project which provides operational support to schools, Non-Formal Education (NFE) and Kindergarten (KG) centres to address the high dropout rates among young children.

Hintergrund Jordan hosts an estimated 1.3 million Syrian registered and unregistered with almost half of the 120’000 registered Syrian refugees in camps being children (48.4%). All  school-aged children in camps (36’500) deserve quality education that leads to  post-secondary work and tertiary educational opportunities. While the Ministry of Education (MOE) operates formal schools in camps, many children drop out of school or are at risk of dropping out (4’630), for different reasons: overcrowded  classrooms, lack of trained and qualified teachers, violence in schools, and lack of conducive learning factors at home. These challenges are particularly pronounced for Children with Disabilities (CwDs) because access is further impacted by lack of resources, teaching capacity and knowledge, and accessibility for these individuals. 
Ziele Vulnerable children and young people in Syrian refugee camps in Jordan are increasingly included in learning and skills-building opportunities.   
Zielgruppen

Vulnerable children and young people in refugee camps: 

o  37’000 Children aged 5 to 17 years enrolled in formal education in refugee camps 

o  608 Young people aged 12 to 18 years for boys and 12 to 20 years for girls enrolled in non-formal education in the refugee camps 

Mittelfristige Wirkungen Outcome1: Vulnerable Syrian boys and girls have increased access to quality, safe  and inclusive education in the refugee camps. 
Resultate

Erwartete Resultate:  

Output  1.1: Schools, NFE centres and KG2 centres in the refugee camps have strengthened capacity to provide quality and inclusive education. 

Output 1.2: Schools in the refugee camps have an improved and safe learning environment.

Koordination mit anderen Projekten und Akteuren The project is aligned with ICS 2025-28, SCP 2025-28, the objectives of the country’s education strategies and priorities, mainly Jordan vision 2025, the National Human  Resource and Development strategy (HRD) 2016-2025, the Education Strategic Plan (ESP) 2018-2025 and the Jordan Declaration on Inclusion and Diversity in Education. The project also complements SDC’s project with UNESCO and NRC, which  focuses on system strengthening and improving access to quality education.
