Human Rights Day 2017

In exactly one year from today, on 10 December 2018, Switzerland together with the international community will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which 70 years after its adoption, remains of unequivocal relevance. Human rights are a necessity for our societies, an invaluable ingredient to boost peace and stability and to foster sustainable development. Human rights are at the heart of the values represented by Switzerland and its political model, which is founded on the principles of democracy, non-discrimination, gender equality, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among people having different religious, linguistic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Switzerland calls upon its partners to join it in making this Human Rights Day 2017 a day of unequivocal relevance for the promotion and the protection of human rights.

Swiss contribution to construct bridges to improve the all-weather accessibility in Nepal

The Government of Switzerland has agreed to contribute a total of CHF 9.9 million (equivalent approximately NPR. 1 billion) to Government of Nepal (GoN) to accelerate the construction of bridges and facilitate improved access through Motorable Local Road Bridge Programme (MLRBP), Phase III. The proposed phase will further build on the confidence of the GoN on the Swiss technical support and strictly follow the national labour standards during the construction works. The proposed phase is considered to be an expansion phase of 3.5 years from March 2017 to July 2020.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between the Government of Nepal represented by Department of Archeology and the Government of Switzerland represented by the Embassy of Switzerland in Nepal. Through this MoU, Switzerland will rehabilitate/reconstruct the two monuments (Tripurasunadri and Taleju Temple) and a heritage cobble stone foot trail connecting the heritage monuments in Dolakha equivalent to CHF 700’000.00 (NRs. 75’000’000.00). The construction works will follow strict archeological norms and standards and is expected to be complete by December 2018.

His Excellency Dr. Jörg Giovanni Frieden presented to Her Excellency the Right Honourable Ms. Bidya Devi Bhandari, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the Letter of Credence accrediting him as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal on November 10th, 2016.

Switzerland and Denmark together with UNDP support the NHRC to promote a better human rights situation in Nepal

The Governments of Switzerland and Denmark have agreed to jointly contribute USD 1.2 mio. to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nepal. The program aims to support the implementation of the NHRC’s Strategic Plan and to develop the internal capacity of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to effectively protect and promote human rights in Nepal.
