The home crowd at this year’s Zürcher Theater Spektakel will be treated to theatre productions from a variety of countries. The SDC is lending its financial support to the event, which will include the following acts from the developing and transitional countries of the South and East:
“Hearing“ (European premiere/Rote Fabrik, 19–21 August)
Amir Reza Koohestanis presents the European premiere of his latest piece, “Hearing“. This gripping whodunnit performed by a female cast shines the spotlight on everyday life in Iran.
“(Un)official Language“ (premiere/Rote Fabrik, Aktionshalle, 08–10 August)
Panaibra Gabriel Canda from Mozambique performs the premiere of “(Un)official Language“, accompanying renowned Portuguese jazz singer Maria João on a journey of discovery that examines the dichotomy between the language of feeling and the language of thinking.
“The Last Attitude“ (European premiere/Nord, 06–08 August)
As budding dancers, Mamela Nyamza and Nelisiwe Xaba once dreamt of becoming tutu-wearing ballerinas. In “The Last Attitude“ the two South African choreographers target ballet, one of the bastions of European elitist culture, with astuteness and wit.
“Host“ (Rote Fabrik, Fabriktheater, 06–09 August)
Philippine performer Eisa Jocson has already proven herself to be an outstanding and highly intelligent artist on the weight of the two previous short pieces that she has performed at the festival. Now she presents the third part of her trilogy on the Philippine entertainment industry. “Host“ focuses on the Philippine women who work as geishas in Japan.

Eight young theatre and dance performers – including Cie Désir Collectif from Burkina Faso, Viktoriya Myronyuk from Ukraine, Alexandre Paulikevitch from Lebanon, Venuri Perera from Sri Lanka, Choy Ka Fai and Rianto from Singapore and Indonesia, and Mallika Taneja from India – present their short pieces and works in progress.
