For Swiss artist Rolf Klaus, creating sculptures is about releasing creative energy. Primitive tools such as hayforks, hoes, shovels, and grates are used in his artworks.Klaus favors the ParaART movement, whereby blacksmith tools are made without welding. During his residency in Guangzhou, some of his objects will be further developed and assembled as mobile sculptures.

The Rainmakers are a prime example of the fruitful exchange between the North and South. Bänz Oester and Ganesh Geymeier come from Switzerland, while Afrika Mkhize and Ayanda Sikade are among the new continent-hopping talents from South Africa. The four of them form a close-knit, inseparable unit.Since the band started in 2012, they have performed across European and African stages to great acclaim. Their music has been described by the Swiss media as “full of joy,” “breathtaking,” “brilliant and animated,” and “inspiring from beginning to end.”

On June 1, 2016, Switzerland celebrated the opening of the world’s longest railway tunnel, which was a milestone of worldwide significance. For this occasion, in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong and the Royal Geographical Society - Hong Kong, The Consulate proudly present a talk by Prof. Emeritus Christian Schlüchter – Assistant Professor between 1986 and 1983 at the Institute of Geology at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ) and Professor and Chair in Quaternary and Environmental Geology at the University of Bern – to talk about this masterpiece in engineering from a geological point of view.

According to Swiss Jazz Zeitung newspaper, innovative Swiss jazz trio VEIN is “driving tradition forward with great curiosity, a passion for anything different, highest improvisational finesse, and superb interplay.” Comprising pianist Michael Arbenz, bassistThomas Lähns, and drummer Florian Arbenz, the trio has been active in Europe’s music scene since 2006 and has shared the stage with renowned jazz musicians. Besides their live shows at a few cities in China, the trio will be featured at the OCT-Loft Jazz and Shunde Music festivals.

In October, Swiss pop-jazz band bconnected will perform nine shows across China. Chinese musicians will join the group to provide a sensitivity retransmitted by traditional instruments including the erhu (Chinese fiddle). Their concerts will be at the famous jazz clubs in China, with one of them at this year’s Nine Gates International Jazz Festival in Beijing.

In December 2008, Swiss musician Jeroen Visser found himself jamming with Mesele Asmamaw from Ethiopia and Fabien Duscombs from France in the district of Kazanchis, Ethiopia. Their electric chemistry led them to form the band Kazanchis+1, an ode to the district that has brought many musicians and dancers together. With Duscombs holding down lively beats, multi-instrumentalist, Visser adds his spirit of experimentation and punk rebellion to Asmamaw’s mastery and innovation on the krar (Ethiopian lyre). The result is a psychedelic-tinged jazz funk. The trio will be in China in October for the World Music Festival.

Real Fiction Cinema

Real Fiction Cinema, a non-commercial temporary art installation, will start its China premiere in Shanghai on September 27 after travelling extensively in Switzerland. Curated by Swiss curator Klaus Littmann and Dutch artist Job Koelewijn, the project comprises of three cinemas at three locations in Shanghai. It intends to provide a unique perspective of temporary art interventions in public spaces. After Shanghai, the project will go on a tour of 10 cities in China. A book and an independent film will be produced and distributed worldwide after the tour.

Whether designing books, catalogues, magazines, posters, typography, or other digital projects, ECAL students are renowned for their mastery and expertise. Their success is due in no small part to campus workshops which allow them to learn from the best Swiss and international graphic designers.The ECAL Graphic Design exhibition highlights a number of animated and inspiring projects conducted by Bachelor of Graphic Design and Master of Art Direction graduates over the past five years.The selected contemporary works also pay tribute to the influential Swiss-style graphic design featuring minimalist design and simple layout.
