Accelerating Rwanda's Nutrition Outcomes
The recent Rwanda Demographic Health Survey showed only a slight decline of stunting from 38% to 33%, not fulfilling the target of achieving 19% by 2024. As a result, a special national-wide programme "Accelerating Rwanda's Nutrition Outcome" is needed to get closer to the set targets. In parallel, the process of developing the new Strategic Plan for Agriculture (PSTA-5) and the new National Transformation Strategy (NST-2) offers us a unique opportunity to influence their development by a world leading organisation.

Contexto | In Rwanda malnutrition is ranked among the top priorities of the government due to the slow progress in reducing the prevalence of stunting. The proposed solutions have not led to the expected progress, mainly due to the lack of a holistic and coordinated strategy between the various ministries in charge, as well as the lack of vision and coordination on the part of development partners. The preparation of the new national strategy for transformation (NST-2) offers a unique opportunity to influence the debates and shape the future of nutrition programmes in Rwanda. |
Objetivos | The common goal is to collaborate on developing a food system institutional framework to guide action to advance nutrition outcomes by improving the consumption of nutritious and healthy food for all Rwandans, especially those most vulnerable to malnutrition. |
Grupos destinarios | Children under 5 years, pregnant and lactating women |
Efectos a medio plazo |
a) Analysis and recommendations: Gather data, facts and evidence with multiple stakeholders on the state of nutrition and the political economy of nutrition in Rwanda, including policy assessments and gaps across sectors and provide recommendations and guidance for both development and implementation. b) Dialogue to prioritize: via a few targeted dialogues and learning opportunities, engage with policymakers and a broad base of stakeholders (government ministries, UN Agencies, civil society, businesses, etc.) to prioritize a multi-sectorial plan of action to accelerate nutrition in Rwanda. c) Embed recommendations into national strategies: build a sequencing of recommended actions with indicators and monitoring mechanism to improve nutrition and foster healthy diets from sustainable food systems, aligned across government ministries, in NST-2 and PSTA-5. |
Resultados |
Resultados previstos: Nutrition strategy and indicators for the future NST-2. A new national-wide programme for improved nutrition and reduction of stunting. Rwanda is part of the international effort "Nurishing Food Pathways" (NFP) programme. Resultados de las fases anteriores: SDC is actually financing a UN initiative on nutrition. The third phase is coming to an end by June 2025. Despite some good achievements such as the introduction of Children score cards and the elaboration and the distribution of fortified and blended maize, some shortcomings have been highlighted in an external evaluation of WFP country strategic plan 2019-2024. The lack of link between policy work, implementation and results of beneficiaries, lack of funding and adequate staffing as well as internal management challenges. Overall, the assessment is positive with strong capacities strengthening and evidence based programming. |
