Switzerland urges immediate halt to flogging in Saudi Arabia

Switzerland condemns the punishment of a man in Saudi Arabia sentenced to 1,000 lashings. After the first 50 lashings were administered last Friday, Switzerland is calling on the Saudi authorities to refrain from continuing the punishment and to respect its obligations regarding the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment.


Working visit by Latvian Foreign Minister, Edgars Rinkēvičs, to Bern

Federal Councillor and Foreign Minister, Didier Burkhalter, received his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkēvičs today in Bern. Their talks focused on the presidency of the Council of the European Union, which Latvia will hold during the first half of 2015, and future bilateral relations between Switzerland and the EU. The two foreign ministers also discussed various aspects of bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Federal Council approved the 2014 Foreign Policy Report at its meeting on 14 January 2015. The report provides an overview of Swiss foreign policy and gives an account of Switzerland's most important foreign policy activities in 2014. It contains a chapter focusing on Switzerland's OSCE chairmanship in 2014.


Federal Council adopts Switzerland's negotiating mandate on the Post-2015 Development Agenda

Since 2012, the United Nations and its member states have been working on a new universal agenda for global sustainable development to replace the Millennium Development Goals, which expire at the end of 2015. On 14 January 2015, the Federal Council gave the mandate to the Swiss delegation to take part in the intergovernmental negotiations. The UN member states will negotiate the new goals, their implementation and financing until July 2015 in New York, culminating in the adoption of the new agenda for sustainable development by heads of state and government at a summit meeting on 25–27 September 2015.

The SDC has a double presence in Haiti, a priority intervention country in a fragile condition. Experts from the SDC’s Humanitarian Aid and South Cooperation Department domains work in synergy as part of a 'comprehensive approach'. This involves a close coordination of efforts and offers real potential in terms of project sustainability. Five years on from the 2010 earthquake, which claimed over 230,000 lives, two examples testify to the success of this approach.

26 December 2004 is a date that remains etched into the minds of tens of thousands of victims of the tsunami that devastated South Asia. It also evokes particular memories among the humanitarian aid workers who provided emergency assistance. Now deputy head of the Swiss Cooperation office in Sri Lanka, Lars Büchler has worked in the country since 2005. Ten years on, he tells his story with an insider's view of the aid provided by Switzerland at the time.

Ten years after the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed more than 225,000 people, rendered millions homeless and caused massive destruction in 13 countries, various events will take place to remember the disaster of 26 December 2004. Switzerland will take part in memorial ceremonies in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India. The 2004 tsunami claimed the lives of 113 Swiss nationals. Switzerland supported the emergency aid and reconstruction efforts within the framework of the Swiss Confederation's Humanitarian Aid.
