Francophonie summit: President of the Swiss Confederation promotes Geneva's role in global digital governance

Some 30 heads of state and government participated in the 18th Francophonie Summit, which ended today in Djerba, Tunisia. Speaking at the summit, President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis highlighted Geneva's role in global digital governance and declared his support for the re-election of Louise Mushikiwabo for a second term at the helm of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). In Djerba, Switzerland assumed the vice-presidency of the Summit.


Italian President Sergio Mattarella to pay state visit to Switzerland

Italian President Sergio Mattarella is to pay a state visit to Switzerland at the end of the month. The Swiss government, led by President Ignazio Cassis, will receive President Mattarella with military honours in Bern on Tuesday, 29 November. In addition to bilateral relations between Switzerland and Italy, the official talks at the Bernerhof will focus on the security situation with regard to the war in Ukraine, European policy and the work of the UN Security Council.


President of the Confederation Ignazio Cassis signs agreement in Malta on the implementation of the second Swiss contribution

During an official visit to Malta, President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis met on Friday 18 November 2022 with Foreign Minister Ian Borg. Their talks focused on bilateral relations, Switzerland's and Malta's non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council, and cooperation in the digital domain. Mr Cassis also signed the agreement with Malta on the implementation of the second Swiss contribution. On the margins of this meeting, Mr Cassis also participated in the Digital Diplomacy and Governance Summit.


President Cassis to visit Belgium next week

Ignazio Cassis, President of the Swiss Confederation, will visit Belgium from 23 to 25 November, where he will be received on a state visit by King Philippe. The visit reinforces the strong ties between Switzerland and Belgium, two countries that share many values and common interests. The visit will include talks with Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and meetings with parliamentarians and other prominent figures.


Confederation recognises extraordinary nature of June 2021 US–Russia summit

At its meeting on 16 November 2022, the Federal Council decided to consider the meeting of the Russian and American heads of state in Geneva on 16 June 2021 an 'extraordinary event' under the Federal Act on Measures to Safeguard Internal Security. This means that the Confederation will cover part of the costs of ensuring the security of the summit and its participants.


Free movement of persons: Federal Council invokes the safeguard clause for Croatia

Access to the Swiss labour market is to be restricted again for Croatian nationals in 2023. The number of workers from Croatia has risen sharply this year and now exceeds the threshold figure defined in the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons. The Federal Council therefore decided at its meeting on 16 November to invoke the safeguard clause provided for by the Agreement.


President of Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis travels to Malta and Francophonie Summit in Djerba

President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis will attend the 18th Francophonie Summit in Djerba, Tunisia, on 19–20 November 2022. The summit, to be held under the theme "Connectivity in diversity: digital technology as a vector of development and solidarity in the Francophone space", will be an opportunity for Mr Cassis to highlight International Geneva's pivotal role in digital governance. On 18 November, Mr Cassis will make a stopover in Malta to hold bilateral talks and participate in the Summit on Digital Diplomacy and Governance.

Education in crisis situations: Switzerland reinforces its commitment

Armed conflicts, forced displacement, natural catastrophes and other crises have left 222 million children around the world with little or no access to education. On 9 November 2022 the Federal Council decided to continue its commitment to education in crisis situations, authorising a contribution of CHF 25 million to the Education Cannot Wait fund for the period 2022–24.
