Relations between Switzerland and El Salvador are good although not very intensive. Switzerland's interests in El Salvador are represented by the Swiss embassy in Costa Rica.
Political relations between Switzerland and El Salvador are relatively modest. Switzerland's diplomatic and consular tasks are handled by the Swiss ambassador based in San José (Costa Rica). Switzerland and El Salvador have concluded agreements on the promotion and protection of investments.
Trade with El Salvador is limited in scope. In 2020 Switzerland imported CHF 2.3 million in goods from El Salvador, mainly comprising machinery and textile. In the same year, it exported primarily machinery, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics worth CHF 12 million to El Salvador.
Researchers from El Salvador can apply to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

According to statistics on the Swiss Abroad, 422 Swiss nationals were living in El Salvador at the end of 2020.
In 1913, Switzerland opened its first consulate in San Salvador, which was upgraded to a consulate general in 1959 and to an embassy in 1968. In 1979, Switzerland closed its embassy following the murder of the chargé d’affaires. A consular agency was opened in 1982. In 1997, the agency was transformed into an honorary consulate general. The Swiss embassy in San José is now responsible for diplomatic affairs.
