Bilateral relations Switzerland–San Marino

Switzerland has had an ambassador accredited in San Marino since the year 2000, namely the Swiss ambassador in Rome.

Cooperation between the two countries focuses on providing mutual support for candidates in international and multilateral organisations. In addition, the two countries share an interest in holding occasional talks on developing closer relations with the EU, in particular with regard to the financial sector, tax issues, and the free movement of persons.

At the end of 2016 there were 19 Swiss nationals living in San Marino.

The Republic of San Marino is a small enclave situated in Italian territory. Its independence goes back to the year 301 AD and its first statutes date from 1243. Up until 2000 the Swiss Consulate General in Florence represented Switzerland’s interests in San Marino, after which the ambassador in Rome took over this responsibility. The diplomatic representative of San Marino in Switzerland was accredited as an ambassador in 1997. San Marino maintains a Consulate General in Geneva and an Honorary Consulate in Lugano.
