On 25 May 2011, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, joined by the Director-General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) on the Bundesplatz in Bern to inaugurate a number of public open-air events illustrating Switzerland’s work in the area of cooperation and humanitarian assistance. In celebration of its Jubilee (1961-2011), the SDC has decided to present its many activities to the public in several Swiss cities. After Geneva in April, the SDC’s street actions moves on to Bern, 25-27 May 2011.

The Swiss Delegate for Humanitarian Aid, Ambassador Toni Frisch, chairs the 18-19 May sessions of the 9th Meeting of the Advisory Group on Environmental Emergencies (AGEE), which is being held in Bern. The AGEE seeks to improve efforts made to prevent, prepare for and overcome environmental emergencies.

The Federal Council received King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain on a state visit to Switzerland. After their arrival in Switzerland in the presence of the President of the Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey, a special train took the royal couple to Bern for military honours, official speeches in the Parliament and bilateral talks between the Swiss and Spanish delegations. Friday, the second day of the state visit, will be marked by a meeting with members of the Swiss business community in Bern and a cultural programme in the Canton of Vaud.

Switzerland has announced that it has frozen CHF 410 million in assets held by Egyptian individuals belonging to the former Mubarak regime. If evidence shows that these frozen assets stem from illegal sources, the Swiss government hopes to quickly return them to Egypt within an international mutual legal assistance framework. A team of Swiss experts travelled to Cairo on 10 and 11 May 2011 to assist the Egyptian judicial authorities in establishing mutual legal assistance procedures.

A delegation of representatives from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO, headed by the Director-General of the SDC, Martin Dahinden, will represent Switzerland at the fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries, due to take place in Istanbul from 9-13 May 2011. By attending, Switzerland is confirming its commitment to the world’s poorest countries. The goal of the conference is to approve a new action plan for these countries.

The President of the Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, will attend the annual meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Istanbul next Tuesday, 10 May 2011. The main items on the agenda will be challenges in dealing with cultural diversity, integrating foreigners and minorities, and the European neighbourhood policy. In the margin of the meeting, the Swiss President will have talks with the Turkish President, Abdullah Gül.

Switzerland will be represented by a top-level delegation at the United Nations Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction which will take place from 8 to 13 May 2011 in Geneva. This will be the third time that Switzerland hosts the Platform, which will bring together more than 2,000 representatives of governments, parliaments, international organisations, the scientific community, civil society and the private sector from around the world to discuss the subject of protection against natural disasters. Disaster risk reduction has traditionally been a priority of Swiss humanitarian action.

The Federal Council strongly condemns the use of force by the Libyan ruler against the people. It would like to express its condolences to the victims’ families. In view of the developments, the Federal Council has decided with immediate effect to block any assets in Switzerland of Moammar Gaddafi and those who are closely associated to him. In this way, the Federal Council wishes to avoid any risk of embezzlement of any assets belonging to the Libyan state still held in Switzerland.

At its meeting on 15 October 2025, the Federal Council discussed measures to strengthen the involvement of the cantons and Parliament in Switzerland's foreign policy on the Swiss–EU package. Next steps for concluding an arrangement with the cantons and expanding information mechanisms for the parliamentary committees were also set out. These proposals will be included in the Federal Council dispatch expected to be submitted to Parliament in March 2026.

From 15 to 17 October 2025, the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA) summit will bring together around a thousand researchers, diplomats, ministers, representatives of the private sector and philanthropists to discuss the challenges posed by new technologies and their impact on people's lives. In his speech, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs will highlight the work that science and diplomacy do together in facilitating discussions between states when they need to define rules for the use of new technologies. These types of negotiations often take place in Geneva.

The Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has chosen Ambassador Jürg Lauber to succeed Gilles Carbonnier as Vice-President of the institution, who will end his second four-year term on 31 March 2026. Currently Switzerland's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva, Jürg Lauber is also this year the President of the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN Human Rights Council has adopted, by a large majority, a resolution put forward by Switzerland and seven other countries to ensure that those facing the death penalty have the right to equality before the law. This success represents a further step on the way to abolishing capital punishment. The 60th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) ended today following a month's work. This was also the final session chaired by Swiss diplomat Jürg Lauber.

Switzerland and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea signed an agreement today on the restitution of CHF 22.8 million to Equatorial Guinea. The funds will be used to finance a project aimed at improving the quality of and access to primary healthcare services for vulnerable peoples in four of the Central African country's provinces. The funds returned will therefore benefit the country's population.

During the high-level week of the 80th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the FDFA highlighted its priorities: promoting peace, respecting international humanitarian law and strengthening multilateral cooperation. At its meeting on 20 December 2019, the Federal Council approved an exchange of notes between Switzerland and Italy regarding the change of the customs status of the Italian enclave of Campione d'Italia. This exchange of notes is necessary to ensure legal certainty and facilitates the transition of Campione d'Italia into the European Union's customs territory, scheduled for 1 January 2020.

On 13 December 2019, the Federal Council decided to extend for one year the preventive freeze on the assets relating to Tunisia and Ukraine. The purpose of this decision is to support the judicial cooperation between Switzerland and these two states.
