International Conference on “60 Years of the Geneva Conventions and the decades to come”

A conference of experts organised by Switzerland in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) entitled “60 Years of the Geneva Conventions and the decades to come” began today at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG). Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger and the former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan attended the opening ceremony.


3. Global Forum on Migration and Development - Ambassador Gnesa heads Swiss delegation

The third Global Forum on Migration and Development is due to take place in Athens 4-5 November, with 150 States in attendance. They will discuss the possibility of strengthening cooperation in these two areas. The Swiss delegation will be headed by the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary for International Migration Cooperation, Eduard Gnesa.

Switzerland sees the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions as an opportunity for strengthening humanitarian law, ensuring greater respect for its principles and better protection for the victims of armed conflicts. With this in mind Switzerland, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has organised a conference of government and international experts entitled “60 Years of Geneva Conventions and the decades to come”. It will be held at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) on 9-10 November 2009.




Visit by Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe

The new Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, arrived in Switzerland today, Wednesday 28.10.09, for his first official visit. His talks with Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey focused on Switzerland’s imminent accession to the chair of the Committee of Ministers, the Council’s decision-making body. Other important topics of discussion included ways and means for cooperation, Switzerland’s priorities as chair, reform of the Council and current political issues.


Switzerland elected to UNESCO World Heritage Committee

Yesterday evening in Paris, Switzerland was elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee by a clear majority, at the biennial General Assembly of the 186 signatory states of the World Heritage Convention. 12 of the 21 seats on the committee had to be filled and there were 29 candidates from among the signatory states.



FDFA target of virus attack

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has been the target of a professional virus attack. Analyses are currently in progress in order to determine whether the IT system has been damaged. The FDFA has isolated its IT network from the Internet.


Federal Councillor Calmy-Rey received the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs

Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, today received the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Angel Moratinos for a working visit and luncheon. Spain will assume the EU Presidency on 1 January 2010 and, in this capacity, will be a particularly crucial discussion partner for Switzerland.


Official visit to Berne by Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan

On Monday, Federal President Hans-Rudolf Merz met the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, during his official visit to Berne. The topics discussed by the statesmen included the development of cultural and economic relationships between Switzerland and Azerbaijan, cooperation with multilateral financial institutions, and the strengthening of cooperation in the energy field. This morning, President Aliyev was received by Alain Berset, President of the Council of States.
